Metropolitan Home

Since 1984, BDI has been driven by our passion for original design. In celebration of BDI’s 25th anniversary and to commemorate this occasion, BDI hosted a student design competition, co-sponsored by Metropolitan Home magazine. We believe that this was a unique opportunity for aspiring design students to develop their design work and inspire new talent in the furniture industry.

WINNING COLLECTION DEBUT

AND THE WINNERS ARE...

Bill Becker and Tim Seward

The winning collection was selected by a team consisting of BDI’s designers and sales leaders. The winners were introduced at a dealer reception at April’s International Home Furnishings Spring Market, and will also be showcased at the CEDIA Expo in September. Congratulations to all entrants. We were struck by the innovation and thoroughness of many of the design entries. While there were many entries from multiple universities, a special honor was give to San Jose University instructor Leslie Speer, in recognition of a truly remarkable and ‘design driven’ department.

Winning Entry
Myriad, Timothy Seward

SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

The MYRIAD was something that just instinctively came from my mind. I know I have been influenced by Bauhaus and Mondrian without even realizing their impact. The high contrast and bold statement is what I used to develop the collection of living room furniture.

1st Runner-up
Versa, Atul Lall + Faris Elmasu

SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

VERSA is all about dynamics—it seeks not to be another stagnant piece of furniture. Thanks to VERSA’s moveable top, VERSA can change to accommodate a new layout at the user’s discretion and thus encourages user interact-action and aids in the human nature for change.

2nd Runner-up
Revolve, Cassie Tweed

SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

The inspiration behind REVOLVE is the quickly evolving quality of design and technology of entertainment electronics. REVOLVE aims to please those that are interested in the ever changing design of technology, as well as those who enjoy clean and modern aesthetics.
